Spinal Health Under Discussion: Diagnosis and Treatment

Publicado em 28.10.2026

On today’s episode of “Vamos Falar de Saúde”, we welcomed specialists from the Orthopedic Center to discuss spinal deformities.

Spinal deformities consist of structural or postural anatomical changes that affect the natural curvature of the vertebral column, compromising the biomechanical harmony of the human body. According to Dr. Victorino Tchilulu, who holds a postgraduate degree in Neurological Physiotherapy for Adults, these conditions include deviations such as scoliosis, pronounced kyphosis, and excessive lordosis. They may manifest as early as childhood or develop throughout adulthood. The causes are multifactorial, including:

  • Congenital factors
  • Prolonged poor postural habits
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Natural tissue aging
  • Underlying neuromuscular pathologies.

Regarding predisposition, Dr. Victorina Martins—a physiotherapist trained in acupuncture—points out that certain anomalies, such as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, occur significantly more often in females, particularly during pubertal growth spurts. “Women show a greater statistical vulnerability to certain types of spinal deviations, which requires careful monitoring by guardians and healthcare professionals,” the specialist emphasizes.

When left unaddressed, the consequences of these deformities go beyond mere aesthetic concerns. Patients may experience severe chronic pain, significant mobility restrictions, premature muscle fatigue, nerve compression, and—in more serious cases—impaired respiratory capacity due to deformation of the rib cage.

However, the prognosis changes significantly with timely medical and therapeutic intervention. Early treatment plays a revolutionary role in rehabilitation, making it possible to halt the progression of spinal deviations, retrain posture, strengthen stabilizing muscles, and avoid invasive surgical procedures. By combining specialized physical therapy with complementary techniques—such as acupuncture for pain relief—patients experience significant, long-lasting improvements in their quality of life, autonomy, and overall well-being.

To explore this vital topic further and address any questions regarding spinal care, we invite all our readers to watch the full interview, available on the Grupo Liberatos Facebook and YouTube channels.
