As part of the awareness-raising initiatives promoted by the Liberatos Group—in partnership with the Provincial Government of Huíla and Rádio Huíla—the latest edition of the program “Vamos Falar de Saúde” addressed a topic of critical importance to public health: the aftereffects of a stroke (cerebrovascular accident).
The panel featured physiotherapist Dr. Alexandra Capita and nursing director Dr. Filomena Walipi, with Lucrécia Miguel serving as host.
During the broadcast, the experts clarified the fundamental concepts of the condition, explaining that a stroke occurs when there is a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain. They highlighted the two main types of stroke: ischemic (caused by the obstruction of a blood vessel, which is the most common and well-known type) and hemorrhagic (resulting from the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain).
The guests cautioned that while individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes, excess weight, or those who smoke or lead a sedentary lifestyle are the most affected, a stroke can strike anyone—including young people.
“A stroke is a medical emergency, but the best way to combat its serious consequences remains prevention. Adopting an active lifestyle, maintaining a balanced diet, and strictly managing blood pressure are decisive steps in avoiding the onset of the condition,” the professionals emphasized.
Regarding the recovery process and potential aftereffects, the importance of a collaborative approach between nursing and physiotherapy was underscored. Specialized care enables the rehabilitation of motor functions, restores patient autonomy, and provides a better quality of life for survivors.
