In today’s edition of the program “Vamos Falar de Saúde” , we welcomed orthoprosthetic technician Dr. Gabriel Chipalanga and physiotherapist Dr. Alfredo Fernando to the studio for an enlightening discussion on the various types of orthoprosthetic devices and their role in physical rehabilitation and the restoration of human bodily function.
During the interview, the experts emphasized that the recovery of a patient’s mobility, autonomy, and quality of life depends, to a large extent, on the appropriate selection, correct fitting, and precise adjustment of orthoprosthetic devices.
The guests explained that these devices are essentially divided into two categories: prostheses and orthoses.
Prostheses are designed to replace missing or amputated anatomical segments—including upper and lower limbs—thereby helping to restore mobility, promote independence in daily activities, and facilitate the social reintegration of patients.
Orthoses, on the other hand, are devices designed to support, align, stabilize, or correct specific body structures, helping to prevent deformities and improve the function of weakened joints and muscles.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the fields of orthoprosthetics and trauma/orthopedic physiotherapy—a partnership essential for ensuring effective, personalized rehabilitation tailored to each patient’s specific needs.
In the context of the “Pink October” and “Green October” campaigns—dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and promoting mental health, respectively—the experts stressed that rehabilitation extends well beyond physical recovery. The proper use of orthoprosthetic devices can also contribute to a patient’s self-esteem, psychological well-being, and overall quality of life. The selection and fabrication of each device therefore require an individualized assessment, specialized technical knowledge, and professional guidance—always prioritizing the patient’s functionality, comfort, and dignity.
