Specialist Clarifies Doubts About Ergonomics at Work

Publicado em 20.05.2026

Neurological Physiotherapy specialist, Vitorino Tchilulu, was a guest on today’s edition of the program “Vamos Falar de Saúde” where he discussed a topic of great importance to public and corporate health: ergonomics at work.

The Concept of Ergonomics

During an interview, the specialist defined ergonomics as the science that studies the interaction between the human being and the other elements of a system. In the workplace context, it is a set of norms and guidelines that aim to adapt work to the anatomical, physiological, and psychological capacities of humans—and not the other way around.

The central objective is to ensure that tools, furniture, and the organization of tasks themselves do not constitute factors of aggression to the human body, promoting safer and more adequate working conditions.

Occupational Risks and Prevention

Vitorino Tchilulu issued a warning about the increase in occupational diseases associated with poor ergonomics, with emphasis on repetitive strain injuries (RSI). According to the expert, adopting incorrect postures and remaining in the same upright position for prolonged periods can lead to fatigue, muscle pain, and debilitating injuries.

As an essential preventative measure, he highlighted the importance of taking regular breaks throughout the workday, allowing for muscle recovery and the release of physical and mental tension.

Benefits of an ergonomically suitable environment

The correct application of ergonomic principles is directly reflected in the health of workers and the performance of institutions. Among the main benefits are:

  • Reduced absenteeism, through a decrease in sick leave associated with chronic pain and fatigue;
  • Increased productivity, with more comfortable and efficient workers;
  • Improved overall well-being, with a reduction in physical and mental stress.

The expert also emphasized that creating a safe work environment is a shared responsibility. It is up to institutions to guarantee adequate conditions and equipment, while workers are responsible for adopting good posture and self-care practices in their daily lives.
